Antares Saddle
how do i oil my saddle?
if i want to oil my used antares calfskin saddle, how do i do it? i want to darken the leather, and the man i bought it from recommended walsh's leather oil. how do i brush it on? with a paint brush? in circles? in strokes? will it leave streak marks?

The problem with oiling any leather saddle is that over time the oil will rot the cotton thread. DO NOT use Neatsfoot oil! Warm up some oil oil (Just WARM to the touch, not boiling then apply it to a CLEAN saddle (Clean with liquid or bar glycerin.). Work it in with your hands then wipe off the excess. Let sit a couple of days then do it all again until you reach the shade you desire
1.) Clean saddle with either glycerin bar or liquid glycerin. Bring up to lather, then wipe clean.
2.) Apply olive oil lightly to the whole saddle EXCEPT the billets. Wipe excess off and allow to dry.

Thanks – VERY much appreciated. I need the extra security, so I would go for a saddle with blocks and with a deeper seat. I do like the ones of your Schleese – that is similar to what I am looking for. I'd been thinking about a Jeffries Falcon Hawk event saddle, if I can get one used and then have it fitted to him. Ooh – just looked at the Schleese site – the X-Country Schleese Signature Series saddle is VERY nice. Waaay out of my price range, tho.
Well i don't know much about horses but i think that since both or you sound to be headstrong. You two are going to have to find a way to work together. (i also am nnot found of the way the owner teats them they way you describe). That may be why Magarita is so strong willed. She wants it her way and no other way. While her owner will make it his way, you aren't like that and she probly sences it and wants to see what she can do with you. If i were you i'd just work with her and over time, i am sure you two will be perfect together.
(i also think the reason you and Chkeetah didn't mesh well is because she is used to one way; her owners way, and no one elses.)
But with enough practice and time, you'll be fine with Margarita. Good luck. and i hope i either encouraged you a little, or at the very least was able to get you to laugh at me, giving you some "words of wisedom" when i know nothing about horses
