Barrel Saddle
Do i have to have a special saddle to Barrel race or can......?
If i want to try barrel racing can i just use my western saddle or do i have ot use a special saddle? Also do i need ot take lessons to barrel race or can i do it by myself because i do know how to barrel race i might be gettinga new horse that can barrel race so i hink i am gonna start so plz help!
You don't need a "barrel racing" saddle like you would need a dressage or jumping saddle, but there are certain features that you'll need for turning and burning.
1) a horn that is well placed and grip-able enough to hold on to when you're scooting around a barrel.2) the pommel and the back of the seat should be high enough so you feel tucked in and secure.3) suede or "rough out" texture on the seat and fenders for a bit of traction.
4) depending on your horse, the saddle should be able to outfit a breast collar, back cinch, and tie down. You want the saddle to stay in place as best it can for your safety, plus your horses' safety and comfort
5) Probably the most important thing is that the saddle fits your horse. If you're horse is uncomfortable, he won't like his job, and neither of you will be very happy.
The nice thing about a barrel racing saddle, though, is that they already have all these features (except the fitting--you still need to do that yourself!) plus the bells and whistles like being lightweight, and stragetic fender and horn placement, etc.
I recommend taking lessons. Speed events are more about accuracy control than speed, especially as your first learning. You'll have more fun if you go into it with a few basics and a clear direction. It'll also be a good opportunity for you to get to know your new horse.
also, don't forget about leg protection: I like Horsemen's Choice boots (front and back) and also some type of over-reach/bell boots for the front.
