English saddle school project---help!?
I have a history project that has to deal with revolution (not the fighting kind). I chose to do the revolution of the jumping saddle (or English saddle, doesn't matter), because I keep an all-purpose and a close-contact jumping saddle at home. I want to research the first saddle, and how it evolved as time went on. I checked this with my sophomore history teacher, and he said it was fine. Does anyone have anywhere I could get the information I need?????
your in luck i did a similar project for a class of mine last year i just had to do all the varieties of saddle. the first saddles were made of a simple blanket held in place by a breast collar and girth. it was made thousands of years ago.
today's english saddle? it was developed to give the horse easy movement and have as little padding between horse and rider as possible.
while the dressage saddle actually comes from a european knight's mount as does the style of riding, an english saddle was developed purely for jumping. and then the smaller saddle became popular because of how much free movement it allowed for. it became even more popular once people got a hang of sitting in their legs rather than in their butt. the english saddle originally started out as a saddle with a high pommel and cantle (i would tape a picture labeled with the parts of the saddle with the project.) it look much like the dressage saddle but with a much higher pommel. when jumping came around the pommel and cantle got in the way so saddles without them were experimented with by saddle makers until they developed an english jumping saddle.

How to identify a Jumping Saddle
Is it safe to jump stadium & cross country fences with a Close Contact saddle?
I like the feel of a Close Contact saddle. I want to buy the Mondega Callisto Close Contact, however I'm not familiar with Close Contact saddles. I've ridden in one a few times and liked it a lot. Is it safe to jump cross-country fences & stadium jumps in?

I normally ride in an all-purpose saddle. It was custom made a long, long, long long long time ago. 
It's my coach's and she had it as a little girl (and she's in her late 50's now). It just doesn't feel the same as a Close Contact saddle.
I jump in my Close Contact all the time. Although I am not familiar with the Mondega I use a Collegiate Finalist CC and sometimes a Toulouse Premia which is also a CC. I personally love jumping in close contacts because you can feel the horse take off and the power of his jump and my timing is always better in the CCs.
If it's possible go to a local tack shop and see if you can borrow one of the saddles there. Quite a few tack shops will let you borrow them and test them out. Good luck :~)
