   This problem is normally caused by tension and it would match your description about your self-consciousness. What happens to you is like if you put a clothes peg on a tennis ball. Because it grips so tightly, it just pings off the top. You must relax your knees and make sure they are off the saddle at all times, so you could fit your hands between your knees and the saddle if you tried. Also relax your hips and thighs, so you can wriggle in the saddle. Then try to imagine clicking your heels together under the horse's belly. This should help you keep your lower leg still and on the horse's sides. Also, tuck your bottom forward under you and draw your shoulders down and back, like you are trying to drive the horse forward with your seat (like you would to rock a rocking horse). If you need to, put a neck strap on the horse and hold onto it.
   Many people also find it helps if you hold the reins in the outside hand and drop your inside hand low behind your thigh, but that's only temporary to help you find your centre of balance.
