Is neck reining a part of western training?
I was wondering if a horse is trained to ride western then will it be trained to neck rein or is that something that isn't considered required of a western horse. I rode a horse in a riding class that I found out was trained to neck rein this was a much better way to ride with a curb bit, and he was much better responding.
It seems the long shanks on western bits are not the best for turning just really good at stopping a horse, so is the western curb meant to be ridden with a horse that responds to rein pressure on its neck?
Yes, western pleasure horses should neck rein. That's a very basic lesson for any western horse. In fact, in shows, you should hardly be moving your hand when you turn your horse so he has to neck rein. Curb bits actually apply a lot of pressure to a horse's mouth and direct reining can be torture on a horse. You should definitely use neck reining with a curb bit. Maybe it was just too much pressure on the horse's mouth or the horse was just dead in the mouth.
To train a horse to neck rein, you should use a snaffle bit. Say you want to go left. You pull the left rein and put the right rein against the horse's neck. The horse will learn to go away from the pressure of the right rein and you will eventually be able to cut out the pulling of the left rein. And...voila!! He now neck reins!

my 1/2 loan cob mare has a snaffle bridle single reins pelem bit n curb chain but on her bit there is a sort of conector to reins to the ranes r on to rings at each side can u buy theses .
i have been riding 2 years n jumpin 4 ages but not jumped ma mare hoo jumps top of large wings do u fink ill be ready to jump at a local show by in 1 month n ride her 2-3 times a week
