Draft Horse Saddle

1 More Question About My Draft Horse....?
Ok so I have gotten some good advice and the verdict is definitely in not to ride him at 2 yr.....So can he start to pull things behind him? I know with riding him the strain on the knees is a lot but when he pulls carts, sleds, etc he is pulling against his chest and with his butt muscles. So is starting him on a wagon now ok?? I am currently just saddling him and driving him while I walk behind him with my long driving reigns. Is it ok to start asking him to drag weight yet?
He is 17.3 hands, 1500lbs and 23 months old. Thanx ![]()
I wouldn't. The main problem is the strain it will put on his back. There are growth plates in his back that won't be fully closed until he is six.

When to start a draft under saddle?
I was looking at horses for sale and found a 2 year old percheron draft horse for sale. He's currently 17 hands, and they said he should mature to be about 18 hands. The ad also said he was ready to start being trained under saddle*sorry i dont know a better term, people get pissy when i say break*
But i know it takes longer for drafts to mature, and I also dont agree with starting any horse at 2 years old, id rather cover ground work with them until they are three. My main question is, what's the best time to start a draft under saddle? I'd prefer answers from people who have expierence with heavy horses.
Thank you!
oh, and this wont be my first horse. i've already located a farrier who does draft feet, and know of a couple places to keep him. so all the things along those lines are taken of
thanks again
Someone else posted this and I enjoyed it so much I saved it.

It doesn't specifically mention draft horses; it is a research paper about the growth and development of all horses. You are right that drafts mature slower than the smaller breeds - in general, the taller the horse is (light or heavy) the longer they take to finish growing. Research suggests that the earliest you should start a horse is between 4 and 6. It's a little long, but a very interesting read - I hope you enjoy it!

ENGLISH: You need to measure from your knee to your hip and that will give you your seat size. To measure the seat size on a saddle you start from the button to the side of the pommel, then take the measuring tape and go to the center of the cantle (back of the saddle.).
As for your horse's size, depends a lot on the breed, most TBs, QHs, Arabs take a wide to extra wide tree.
I've owned BOTH kinds and the leather ones are still with me. In the early 90's I traded a set of corner plates for a Wintec Sport and grant it, it was a GREAT saddle, BUT the difference in sitting in one vs my now 40 year old Stubben Siegfried is like the difference between owning a Saturn and trying to compare it to a Mercedes. Let's see if the Wintec holds up to the standards of a Stubben nearly 40 years later.
Our reasoning behind this is that a synthetic, no matter how they make 'em has no "GIVE", that's one of the reasons for the interchangable gullets in the saddles of the Wintecs. I can honestly say in the decades of owning my Siegfried (Stubben), I've NEVER had it on a horse it didn't fit and I've owned a LOT of different sized/breeds of horses. From WIDE Quarter Horses to Narrow TBs and even a couple of Arabs.
If the interchangeable gullets were so successful, then why haven't any of the major European saddlers began using them?
There's always Kieffer, Passier and Courbette which are also European brands and hold their value.
Saddles like Wintecs, don't hold up over time, because of their materials used and the fact that the trees have no give to them you're limited to what type of horse your saddle will fit, whereas something with the old style spring tree will fit a wider range of horses. My old Siegfried is made on a WIDE spring tree and I'd had it on everything from mutton withered QHs to Arabs and even narrower TBs without issue.
Henri de Rivels, Pessoas and such are cheaper versions of the Crosbys, Crumps and other close contact saddles and are made in Argentina/India. Some use French leather, but the craftsmanship is lacking and they don't hold up over time.
I hope that this helps in your selection.
