diff between close contact and jump saddle? and my saddle size? and adjustable saddles?


Hi! I am looking to buy a good jumping saddle- adjustable. something easy to adjust if I change horses, or if my horse changes muscles etc...
What is the difference between a close contact saddle and a jumping saddle?
If I am size 17.5 in a dressage saddle- would my size be 17.5 in a jump saddle?
If a saddle has flocked pannels- or the cair system, does that mean its adjustable? And how do you adjust it? or do you need a saddle fit company to adjust it?

A "Close Contact" saddle is one with minimal padding on the saddle. It usually has plain flaps, pencil knee rolls (if any) and a rather flat, shallow seat in comparison to a Dressage saddle. The cantle is also usually squared rather than rounded. Close contact saddles are excellent for riders who show hunters in over-fences classes because their design allows the rider to get out of the saddle and into two-point efficiently for jumping.

"Jumping saddle" is a rather general term. It can refer to the above-described close-contact, or to a deeper-seated, more forward-cut event saddle that riders tend to prefer over cross-country courses. The deeper seat and padded flat offer greater security, and the forward cut of the flap allow for shorter stirrup length. Whether you'll need a slightly different size from what you now use for Dressage depends on the saddle itself.

Adjustable saddles have come on the market in the last 15 years or so. They come with different-width gullet plates that you insert yourself to make the tree narrower or wider, and the directions are included. You do not need any special tools besides an ordinary flat-head screw-driver. CAIR simply means that the panels are air-filled for extra comfort. Not all adjustable saddles have CAIR panels; some are stuffed with foam or wool. I will say, though, that adjustable saddles have a tendency to rock from side to side even with the appropriate-sized gullet for your horse, so my personal preference is still an old-fashioned fixed-tree.

Collegiate, Bates, and Wintec all make good-quality adjustable saddles. I'm not sure what your budget is, but if you can afford a Bates (typically in the $1,600 range new) get it; they are exceptionally comfortable and well-made. I personally don't care for Wintec because I am a snob who rides only in genuine leather, but my sister LOVES her Wintec saddle.
