Used Dressage Saddles
Dressage saddle with short billet straps?
I have a mid 90's (but brand new) Collegiate Dressage saddle that I bought a few months ago. I have to use regular long girths because it has short billets. My trainer says that the short billets are common for older saddles, but what I'm wondering is if there is anything I can do so that I can use dressage girths. Also, can a saddle repair or stuffer change out billets? Thanks for all of your help in advance!
YES, you can have a saddle repair shop change out billets. I had one done to an old Poley I picked up in the early 80's when some fool took the billets and had them sewn under neath themselves with a "D" ring ala Western rigging put on.
So, just replacing the saddle billets is no biggie.

All purpose, or dressage saddle?
Alright. So I'm planning on doing jumping this year for my Equestrian team. Is this saddle useable for that?
I know that Dressage saddles should NOT be used in jumping.
I use it for dressage, saddleseat, and hunt seat, but I think it's an all purpose.
It's a Stubben, and it's no longer made.
hehe.. I have that saddle. Doesn't fit either of my horses but it was like $10 at a garage.
I would call it an old style all purpose saddle. 30ish years ago (or less), no one used knee role. They are NOT completely necessary to jump correctly. I would be one of the many dying due to the lack of a knee role but it is completely possible to jump without them. My mother fox hunted in a saddle just like that, which is why I have mine. She jumped at buying it because she HATES knee roles. Now that I've restated that ts possible to jump in a saddle without knee roles a bunch of times l continue.
I would definitly say that this saddle is usable if:
- the tree is 100% ok
- it fits your horse
- it fits you
- its safe (no cracks, ect)
Besides that, it looks good to me. Have fun on the team! I loved mine!
EDIT: reading other peoples answers... I kind of feel like the second picture makes the flap look straighter than it actually is. If you have the money, I would invest in a nice forward flap jumping saddle with knee roles but I still don't see anything about this saddle that screams unsutible
