How can I measure grain for my horse?

I am considering buying a Percheron/draft cross mare. She is 16.2 hands high, and weighs about 1,200 pounds. Of course, I will be asking the current owner about feed and hay and such, but I do want to know a way how to know how much grain to give a horse, and how much hay.

If I were to buy her, she would be under saddle a lot - being a hunter/jumper, eventer, dressage and endurance racing horse. She is eight years old.

So, anyone have some tricks?

Thanks. :-)

Feed in normally dispensed by scoop , full or half . So by volume . The quality of food is important , the difference in available energy between say race horse nuts and pony nuts is enormous so that's the place to start make sure you get the feed quality right , you will be able to tell with a bit of experience from how the horse is responding, over energising your horse isn't necessarily the best or safest solution. Opinions on hay vary personally I would give as much hay as the horse wants but some horses blow with too much and again depends on not only the horse but weather the horse is also out at grass and weather sponge or winter which has effect on energy release values . Start from where the previous owners left off and keep eye on the visual condition and the performance of your horse . Good luck

Oh, I am so envious that so many of you can go to the fair! If I was able to go I would hit the animal barns and hope that the draft horses were there. I also like the home canning displays. I was in 4-H as a kid and showed cactus gardens and terrariums at the State Fair for horticulture projects. I never did that well with them at the state level, but it was so much fun to miss school and ride the bus to St. Paul. The last time I was at the fair was on my honeymoon in 1983. I hoped we could get there this year, but schedules just wouldn’t allow.
