How to Find a Dressage Saddle?
Hello,
I'm looking to purchase an english-style saddle to work on my seat, but the location I am at is very western-oriented, so an english saddle is hard to come by.
For this reason I want to purchase something online, but I'm at a loss where to begin my search. I want a nice saddle that won't break me in the wallet, but not a cheaply-made one that, in the end, I won't get much use out of.
I'm thinking I'll need a size 16-17W for my horse. Does anyone have any recommendations on sites?
Please note, I will not compete in this saddle or anything, just own it for light use from time to time. I won't need anything too fancy. Thanks.
dressage saddle is a great switch to w/ english- it also uses the deep seat and longer stirrups like western (unlike the close contact and jumping ones).
Wintecs work well for most people and hold up. Most find them comfortable, and you can get one for $300 or so that holds up pretty well. Personally, I don't like them, but I think I am in the minority.
My favorite "cheap" brand is the Thorowgood saddles (www.doversaddlery.com carries them). They are well made, and extremely comfortable. They are a bit on the expensive side of cheap ($600) but well worth the price. I ride in my 3-5 times a week for 4 years now and it still looks in excellent condition.
16-17 is for your butt size, and I "think" it is equivalent to a 15-16" western seat. Wide- would be good for stockier horses- normal quarter horses and that type of build.
