Where can I find the nearest central office for DSL in Chicago?
I am looking for the most reliable internet possible, hopefully without having to get a T1 line. It is my understanding that the closer you are to the central office the more reliable it will be, right? Do all providers use the same central office locations? Will some providers have Central office locations closer to me, or do they all share the same central offices? The closest one I have found so far is 11,000 feet, will that be decent internet? I am located near Ashland and Fullerton in Chicago.
11000 feet is well within specs for mega high speed (18 megs) (a tad over 2 miles, right?) and well within the 3.5 mile limit.
I can't say ALL dsl providers use the same central offices, but MOST purchase bandwidth from the telephone company, and use their equipment. Funny as heck, I worked in dsl tech support and got a call from an AOL tech agent, he had an aol customer that needed trouble shooting. NOT SUPPORTED.. neener neener neener.. but, being a nice kinda guy, I could not run proper test (aol customer, aol support) but advised the agent what to have the customer do. Since I knew a lot more about the broadband and modems than the poor AOL guy did. (shouldn't they train those guys? at least on modem set up?)
Keep that in mind when choosing your dsl. Can the ISP provide proper tech support.
However, with in 11000 feet, not much can go wrong, aside from what is inside your house, and you can control that. The tech will tell you what the problem is, should there be one, but the usual causes of poor or no connectivity are:
1 the cat unplugged the modem
2 you moved the modem and killed the power or loosened a cord
3 you decide you are smarter than the techs and engineers and use a 25 foot analog telephone cord to replace the 6 foot digital RJ11 that came with the modem.
4 you put the microfilter on the line going to the modem instead of on the phone
5 you did not put filters on all the phones
6 your computer is in the basement (wall jack is corroded from moisture)
7 you fire walled yourself and blocked your modem
8 NIC drivers became corrupted (a power surge or brown out, or improper shut down will do this)
9 you installed a router, and cannot connect (call router tech support) if you have net with out the router in the line, guess what the problem is.
10 Unplug the modem, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. (if you did this, and no connectivity, reboot the computer too)
These are the most common issues. Normally, in case of any outage, a message will be recorded on the tech support line. If you get one of these, the issue is known and being worked on. no need to continue to hold.

Is it possble to get DSL through a phone plan that ISN'T unlimited?
Alright i have my parents have always had this Verizon phone plan that is unlimited---costing about 40 bucks a month, The thing is we don't use our home phone, We only have it because we need a home phone for our DSL connection, So we are grossly overpaying for this phone service that we don't use, Is it possible to get a plan that charges you everytime you make a call and get internet through that? Something that is 50 cents or whatever per minute, I'd call myself but they're closed
thanks alot for any help
Not too sure about the "per minute" type plan, HOWEVER you don't have to have a dial tone to have DSL with Verizon. Just ask for a "dry loop" (that's DSL without a working telephone number). You will only have to pay for the DSL itself.
