i'll keep it short: i want to get an endurance horse. what breed/personality/other areas do you look for a horse to have for endurance riding?
i have an english and westren saddle, what one is better to use? what type of bridle/bit do you use? and what other equipment do you need to start out? Please do not answer about how good arabs are, i already owned arabs and know how good they are. i was thinking about an arab/aqh. thanks again
well arab are generally the best mont for endurance riding. I have ocassionally seen Tb's and Mustangs on the trail as well but i stick to gaited horses. Prefferablly Tennessee Walkers, Missouri Fox trotters and Rockys. There smooth gaits allow you the ability to ntrot but move faster than a trot. Also the arab and standerbredd breeding allow them to travel long distances without getting winded.
Gaited horses also have wonderful personalities. WHen doing small trail rides i tend to use a western saddle but once i began to do longer distances the western saddle became a problem. OS i swithced to Austalian. It is a cross between a English and western and was desgined to travel long distances.
if you want to do endurance it takes almost a year to build up the muscle needed.
first start by doing small hunter paces that are 10- 15 miles. Then move to 20-25 miles( at around 6 months) then at a year you should peak and go to 50 miles.
to be able to do this though you need to be riding 5-6 timesa week at 5- 10 miles a day at least. at first you can start by doing 5 minutes walk, 15 minutes trot, 10 minutes walk, 10 minutes trot untill you reach 1 hour to 2 hours of riding a day.
i will post links of tack, information, and what i consider a good endurance mount for you. and if you have mroe info feel free to email.
