Proper English and hunt seat (jumping) riding etiquette?
I am looking forward to starting English riding and I was wondering if you could send some links to some videos of people riding the proper way. And possible state what you think they are doing correct or what they could do better. Also maybe some tips for getting started. Thanks:)
Well, quoting my book here (Complete Book of Horses and Riding, I highly recommend it to english riders, and some western riders, it's more english though)
:
"You can practice the classical riding position on the ground. First stand straight, with your legs about 2 feet (0.5 m) apart, and your arms bent at the elbow as if you were holding the horse's reins. Keeping your whole body straight and upright, simply bend your knees slightly - now you are in the classical dressage position. For jumping you simply bend your knees more.Your position on a horse should be as if you were standing with your knees bent, rather than as if you were sitting in a chair."
Also "The exact position of the hands, how close they are held to the withers, depends upon the horse's head carriage. There should always be a straight line from the elbow, through the wrist, down the rein to the bit; so if the horse is working with his head quite low, the hands must be carried a little lower and to either side of the withers in order to keep this straight line. When the horse is working in a rounder outline, the hands can be carried a little higher; and when you find yourself riding a highly schooled horse who carries his head and neck higher still, your hands should be carried a few inches above the withers. The rule of thumb is to be aware of keeping the straight line from the elbow, through the rein to the horse's mouth."
