English Saddle Fitting
Pic of correctly fitted english saddle?
I have not rode english since I was 11 and I'm now 20 and I bought an english saddle last week.I have a 16 1/2 western and I bought a 17 1/2 english.I am completely comfortable in my new english saddle but I was wondering if that's the right size? Also if someone could show me a pic of someone sitting in a correctly sized english saddle I would appreciate it! Hope that made sense lol
well, it depends on your shape and what kind of saddle it is..
for example, dressage saddles are fitted larger so that you can sit the extended gaits better. They are also deeper, so it will feel different..
a close contact/jumping saddle will generally have a flatter seat and be a little smaller, since most of the riding would be done whilst up, out of the stirrups.
And, all purpose saddles are just somewhere in the middle..

ALSO, if i remember correctly you should be able to fit a hands width between your butt in the saddle, and the end of the cantle. (so put your hand flat on the saddle between bum and end of saddle.
and, as a last note.. make sure this saddle fits your horse too! With the smaller weight distribution of the english saddle, the fit is even more important.

I have yet to find a website that tells one HOW to measure a saddle.
ENGLISH: You need to measure from your knee to your hip and that will give you your seat size. To measure the seat size on a saddle you start from the button to the side of the pommel, then take the measuring tape and go to the center of the cantle (back of the saddle.).
As for your horse's size, depends a lot on the breed, most TBs, QHs, Arabs take a wide to extra wide tree. You can use a wire coat hanger and place it across the highest part of your horse's withers and make a mold. Take that with you to the saddle shop.
