English Saddle Fitting
What size english saddle do I need?
I know the importance of fitting the saddle to the horse, but I need to know about fitting it to myself. I've always ridden in other people's saddles and this is my first time buying one for myself. I'm an adult, and I know most adults use 17" or 18" but I'm only 5'1", and of average build. So should I stick with like 17" or go smaller?

17" will be fine.
It's better to have more leg room than not enough. I'm 5'5'' and I ride in a 17'' saddle most of the time, but I'm comfortable in 17.5'' and 18'' saddles too. I don't like riding in saddles under 17'' as i feel I don't have a lot of room. You're a little bit shorter than me, so a 17'' saddle will fit you fine.

Have to agree with Laikan here about the resell-ability in general. Regarding your question about timing, have you looked into "Strada Saddles"? Several close friends swear by them in that they fit and move extremely well to their horse's back. They recommended chatting with Kip Mistral (co-author of the book "Horse Training In-Hand"). She lists jumping & all-purpose saddles on her site and it appears that they conform over time so that might be the answer you're looking for. Maybe try reaching out to her for opinions before committing to a large purchase?
