Used English Saddles In

Which saddle pads should I use? (English)?
I usually use a close contact thin white saddle pad like this: http://horseanddogpeople.com/images/ALL%20PURP%20COLOR%20PADS2.jpg and a wither pad like this : http://www.wilkers.com/images/pad25wp.jpg when I ride in lessons but I just got a square pink pad to use in lessons this one:http://www.horsetackco.com/images/swirl-pad-pink-blue.jpg Which pad should I use with my pink pad?
Unless your saddle doesn't fit properly, only use one pad. The pad should be as thin and unobtrusive as possible.
If you are correcting saddle fit with your pads, then you'll want to keep using your wither pad, but you don't need the close contact pad.
Either way- pads are meant for function, so it is unique to each horse/saddle. It all depends on saddle fit. If you are unsure, you can have a saddle fitter come out to your barn (talk to your local tack shops), and they will check your saddle to see if you need any pads besides a basic one. A good trainer may also be able to do this.
You don't need extra pads unless there is a problem with saddle fit, I can't say that enough. You don't need to use a half pad just because everyone else does. If there is no fit problems, then your square pad will be plenty alone.

What do you do with old saddles?
I know our landfills aren't clogged with English saddles, but I still hate throwing them away. Eventually they get to a point where they can't be used anymore, such as when the old wooden trees break. I would love to hear/read any creative uses for retired saddles. For example, I heard of a guy who made bar stools for the bar in his "man cave" out of them.
1) Use them to teach about saddle care, construction etc.
2) Ask local theatres if they have a use for them as props.
That's about all I have ![]()

first. you would probably want a 17.5 long flapped all purpose saddle. someone at the tack shop usually can help you with finding the right saddle. you also will want to take it on trial and make sure it fits your horse properly. if you buy the saddle you can ride in it normally. the more you ride in it the more "broken in" it gets. you can also but leather oil to soften it up quicker. especially with the billet straps. hope this helps
