I ride English saddle seat and dressage, and do it in cotton jeans and cowboy boots (they're less expensive). It's what you and the horse do, not what you wear–the horse wears a flat saddle, which actually gives you more contact with the horse, and more of a sense of what's about to happen. Since most English saddles have breakaway stirrups, it's actually safer, especially for children. And yes, you certainly can grab leather in an English saddle!
