Eventer Saddle
horse lunging techniques?
I just took on a 19 year old TB that hasn't been ridden in three years. He's a giant handful as he acts more like he's three instead of 19. I've noticed (being an eventer) that he has an extreme problem with accepting the bit. I know it's a TB thing but i haven't had one this bad yet and he seems to honestly not know what i'm asking for. I'm looking for any techniques/equipment to use on the lunge line to encourage him to accept the connection comfortably. I'm open to anything ie: exercises both on the ground and in the saddle and different types of tack as long as they are easy for him to get used to. I've tried side reins and draw reins but both seem to do more harm than good as he has begun to fight himself now.

What exactly is he doing? From what you're saying, it sounds like he's raising his head and bracing against the bit, but I could be wrong. Have you experimented with different bits? A french link is a very mild bit, but he might not like the way it feels. See if you can borrow a regular snaffle from someone, or a mullen mouth to see if he likes them better. You can also try getting a bit with a thinner mouthpiece - it's possible he has a small mouth or a big tongue and is just uncomfortable with a standard sized bit. Try a bitless bridle and see if he still braces against you.

Have you or anyone else checked the saddle fit? Checked his teeth or back? Thoroughbreds are so frustrating sometimes. . . you think you know why they're fighting when in reality it's something else entirely.
How do you ride? Next time you get on him, hold a half seat and push your hands forward into his neck. Try to ride without touching him, so to speak, and see if he still braces against you. He may just be unhappy about having full contact and could be happier if you leave his face alone. He might not like the contact you have with the saddle. . . (trying to think of what else set off my TB)

Should I buy this horse?
I would be buying him to compete in jumping. He is a 6 year old Andalusian Cross/Iberian Warmblood. Can you judge his confirmation, His movement and just him in general. He is 15.3 and has been under saddle for 7monthes I think. Do you think he would make a good jumper/eventer? What do you think of him he is 5000OBO. Thanks!
