what is the purpose of a cutback saddle?
just wondering why you would need one? I was thinking something about pressure on the withers but i might be wrong

See how in these videos the horses weight is all back on their haunches and they are lifting up in the front?
That is called Saddle Seat. And that's what those saddles are for.
Saddle Seat is ridden primarily on Morgans and American Saddlebreds, sometimes Arabians, Tennessee Walkers, national Show horses, and a few other breeds are capable of it.
Think if you put a big old western saddle on Stand and Deliver, he wouldn't be able to lift his head or feet up.
Out of those two videos, the woman in the first one has better equitation. Stand and Deliver's trainer doesn't have the best, trainers tend to forget about equitation because after your done as a jr. exhibitor they don't have equitation classes anymore.
But anyway, you can see that she is leaning back and posting straight up. The saddle allows the rider to move farther back as well, which also lets the horse lift up in the front.
Don't worry, no making fun haha a lot of people don't know much about saddle seat unfortunately. It's too bad, it's such an amazing discipline. It's so much fun!
