Headshaking Nose
Horse with headshaking, any suggestions. read inside?
Ok my horse(and I know this sounds weird) suddenly can down with head-shaking syndrome I've researched the nose nets and have found one that secures tightly around the muzzle and nose and reviews on it said that these were better than the ones that just drape over the nose and muzzle, which is better? That's my first question now onto the second question... Are there any homeopathic remedies for head-shaking? or ANY other suggestions you have would be helpful.
My horse was a headshaker. Vet came out and gave her a steroid injection, ventipulin and magnesuim carbonate and had an endoscope to diagnose problems and found nothing and she still head shock.
I gave my horse natural honey. It has to be harvested within a 5 mile radius of where your horse is kept. The bees collect the pollen and you feed the honey and it gives an immunity to your horse. My horse was unrideable. I got blisters on my fingers from riding her. In 2 weeks she was rideable again, within a month all hadshaking stopped. never had it since.
Try it. It is worth a go and good luck.
My honey costs me £10 a month but is certainly worth it.
I now ride her with no nose net and she is superb.

Advice on cribbing, headshaking horse?
I bought a horse which turned out to be a cribber. The vet said it could be gastric ulcers or behaviour issue. I can cope with this, but now for the last 8 days she has been headshaking to the point where she rubbed blisters on my fingers, so it now not possible to ride her.
I called the vet out and she had flared nostrils, heavy breathing, wheezing and clear fluid running from her nose and eyes. She now is on Ventipulmin and magnesuin carbonate and i wonder if anyone has experience with allergies and any solutions on managing them. Vet doesnt seem to think its COPD.
She is wearing a full fly mask, with nose net.
Can anyone help please
Thanks
i dont have any experience with alergies.
with the gastric issues and cribbing ...i just went throught this with my new ottb.
didnt know til i moved to a dif. farm that he was a wood ripper. (old place had electric strand on top rails).
anyway he must have eaten tons of wood when he got there. a few weeks later severe colic AND diareah. long and short of it, he had a stomach infection caused by wood rubbing on ulcers.
since then he has been getting 4 oz. aloe vera juice a day, and pretty much stays off the fences, and does not exhibit signs of gastric upset as before. those signs were biting/kicking when being tacked, or having girth tightened. tail swishing under saddle (dead of winter -no flys) and a generally unthrifty appearance with difficulty keeping weight on.
since i switch to no sugar (seems to encourage cribbing / wood ripping) lo carb , hi fat grain and the juice he has filled out and leaves the fences alone.
april 09 edition of pracrtical horseman has a whole article on alergies and head shaking syndrome.
