Horse Saddle
How do I fit my horse for a saddle?
I don't have a lot of money, so I wanted to get a saddle from an ebay store (because they have very high quality synthetic saddles). How do I measure my horse to make sure I get the right size?
Several measurements are important: the tree width will be determined primarily by a measurement taken across the withers, just back of where the scapula (shoulder blade) ends. You can do this using a flexible measuring device or a wire coat hanger. You'll need to fax the tracing to them, if you can't figure out if he's narrow, med, wide, x-wide. The height of the withers will tell you if you need a high channel at the pommel - most good saddles will have room here, anyway. The length of his back from the cantle to where the pommel will end, it should not extend past where the last rib ends. This might sound complicated, and it is a process to get a saddle to fit properly, but these factors will get you pretty close to getting a well-fitting saddle without your spending a lot of money for a saddle-fitter to come out. The best thing is to try the saddle on your horse without pads, but this isn't an option if you're buying on e-bay, obviously.
