Padded Bridles
Padded Crown on Bridles?
I keep seeing the dressage bridles with the padded crowns, are these really so important or can I just use a normal bridle without worrying about my horse's poll? The padded crown bridles are just so expensive!!
btw, i mean double bridles.
Some horses do get "wear" sores behind their ears. Some bridle makers decided to pad the area, although the REAL problem was that the browbands were too small. Many browbands are so short, that when a dressage horse is "in the groove" with their ears relaxed out to the side and not pricked far forward, the crown does rub. The simple answer is to have a browband that is an inch or so longer so that the crown doesn't approach the ears when in that wonderful relaxed and "floppy" place.
Go ahead and order your choice for double bridle, or a snaffle with a bradoon hanger (you're going to want to use different reins than come with it anyway) and if the browband is too small, you can have the fun of finding a fancy one that is longer.

wats that skinny strap on the nose
its a flash noseband. It is meant to keep the horses mouth closed so that they don't drop their tongue out while riding or bite and grind at the bit.
The flash was originally developed for show jumping riders, so they could close the mouth lower down in addition to having an appropriate noseband for a standing martingale. An additional feature of this noseband is that it holds the bit steady in the horse's mouth, which some horses prefer. The noseband is similar to the plain cavesson in that the top part encircles the nose 1-2 inches below the cheekbone, but it also includes a second strap that runs from the cavesson, around the nose in front of the bit and under the chin groove, then coming back around to the cavesson. This second piece is used to help keep the horse's mouth closed and to keep the horse from crossing his jaw. A flash noseband may be used with a standing martingale when the martingale is attached to the cavesson piece. This noseband is usually seen at the lower levels of dressage, or in the dressage phase of eventing.
