You should really invest in getting real riding boots. You need a boot with a good heel and no traction like those boots have, so your foot doesn't get caught in the stirrup.

APHA Traditional English attire?

Im showing my registered "paint" (Chestnut with 4 white socks above the knee) in a few Hunter under saddle classes as well as some equiation classes. I havent done any APHA classes, and when i asked the show staff what was expected of us to wear (in florida 2 days from now at 1 in the afternoon, oh say 89 degrees?) Anyways all they said was "Traditional English Attire".

We do alot of pony club and foxhunting, as well as showing in many Circuit shows.
Is what there looking for something like long sleeve show shirt (white or can it be colored) obviously tan jods, tall boots, plain belt, hair net, GPA (black suede? helmet, lack of better terms), im really hoping there not going to require Jackets! If so which color, Black, Navy, Green, or Plaid?

Pleaseee help!

Lastly- are we allowed to use protective boots on our horses for the jumping classes?

Hi there,
Paint Pony did a super job quoting from the rule book, so I won't eelaborate there. I would suggest you email or phone APHA and ask for a free copy of the 2009 Rules and Regulations, then you can read all their rules and criteria, such as how the class is judged, etc.
Also, be aware that there is quite a bit of flexibility in how you interprete the rules on clothing. And the look in Hunter under Saddle can vary slightly from zone to zone, so make sure that you keep your eyes open when you show (take a digital camera, too) and then in the future you can change or improve your look as necessary.
The show shirt can be long sleeved, short sleeved or sleeveless, but it obviously must have the traditional high collar. Many exhibitors wear white, but you are allowed to wear fine prints or stripes if they aren't too noticeable at a distance. You are also allowed to wear colors, some exhibitors really like the bright colors such as pink, purple, turquoise, although they aren't too common in my area (Canada) except with the youth. You MUST wear a ratcatcher collar, I've seen people disqualified without their collar. Jackets in Arizona? That will be up to the judge's discression, but the rule book does tell you you must wear one, so I would certainly plan to have one. When i find the weather really hot I'll wear a sleeveless shirt, and put my jacket on at the last moment. The most popular color of jackets in this area are navy and black, but you will see a few greys, taupe or brown jackets as well. I never see plaid in this area, but I don't think it would get you disqualified.
Most riders wear the traditional greenish/tan breeaches, you will see a few in slight variations of the traditional color. Most will wear high black boots. Helmets are normally a bit different on the APHA scene than what you'd see at a traditional Hunter show. A few people wear the GPA jumping helmet with harness, most wear the old style hunt helmet in black velvet, and most do not use a harness in the "on the flat" classes. You will see a few people with schooling helmets at the small shows, but it isn't common. In the jumping classes you will then see the more common approved GPA helmets, sometimes with the stripe down the front, but seldom do you see that type in the flat classes.
Be aware that the rule book does say that your horses saddle pad should be shaped, so you probably shouldn't use the square type dressage pads, also I believe white without colored trim is the rules and certainly all you see at the shows. Most exhibitors here use the English pads with the pockets so you can have your numbers on each side of your horse, and not on your back. You are allowed to wear your number either on each side of your horse or your back, but most adults do not have the number on their back. Some riders will use hair nets, most will just have their hair neatly contained under their helmet. You cannot wear protective boots of any sort in the flat classes, I believe you can for jumping classes, but once again you'd need to pull out your rule book to double check that.
Lastly, most people band their horse's manes instead of braiding, even for the English classes. Both banding and braiding is allowed. Very few people braid their horse's tail in APHA shows, don't braid the tail if you band the mane instead of braiding.
Good luck. I think you'll find it quite different than your pony club and circuit shows as the standard is quite different. APHA Hunter under saddle horses move very low and level with their necks. If your horse tends to have a more rounded headset and a "curved" neck profile you will look very different than the traditional APHA show horse with the long, slow, flat headset. And most APHA shows don't ask the horse to extend the trot. The working trot is often slower and more relaxed at APHA shows than at open shows, too. So don't go in there and really push your horse hard, instead try to focus on a nice flowing, relaxed, ground covering long stride, but not necessarily a fast, road-hack type stride.
Have fun. This show might be tough, but if you watch some more I expect you'll get a feel for the whole thing. i show both English and Western at APHA shows and love it - just not all the expenses!

One Response to “Plaid English Saddle”

  1. mschwendt says:

Because the “seat” refers to the position where somebody sits on the bike, not the thing you sit on. (seat tube => seatpost => saddle)

: seat tube and saddle pin (= seatpost) are two different things. The Danish “sadel pind” is the English saddle pin.
