Purpose Saddle Good What are the trademarks of a good English saddle?
How can you tell if an all-purpose saddle is well made?
Under the saddle flaps the leather should be smooth and not left rough. From the cantle hold the pommel look to see if the front is symmetrical, if one side sticks out more its not good. If the saddle is second hand make sure the tree isn't broken or twisted. Put the saddle on your leg pommel towards you and pull firmly up with the cantle. If there is a lot of give then the tree could be broken. Look for uneven wear of the tree on the underside of the saddle. Even a new saddle can be unsymmetrical. The gullet should be wide enough and stay the same width down the saddle. A good saddle is one that is symmetrical, fits you and the horse.
