Reins Oversize
Should I buy an oversize bridle?
My quarter horse has a fairly large and rounded head and his full size (regular horse) bridle feels a bit snug as well as the standard rein length seem a little too short yet still manageable.
Would and oversize bridle set work better? Or would it just be way too big do you think?
Oops i forgot to mentions hes QH/TB hah hes registered aqha thats why i forgot.. but I use a snaffle bit. Im looking into getting a edgewood bridle as the bridle i have now is a few years old (not edgewood either so the sizing wouldnt be the same i suppose). It looks like I should take measurements first. Helpful answers everyone!
I generally have to buy a separate browband for my quarter horses; they are broad between the ears, and they get pinched and tight.
The size of the bridle as a whole is from bit ring to bit ring. If the buckles are on the last (largest) hole, then yes, go to a larger size. If the buckles for the bit are in the middle or top, then the headstall and crown are the right size, but just the browband is too short.
I try to find 17" browbands at the very least; I have one that is 18" and it is my favorite! I call the tack store (dressage extensions http://www.dressage-ext.com/ or the horse of course http://www.thehorseofcourse.com/) and ask them to pick the longest browband, measure it and tell me what the measurement is. I don't really care what is on the band, just that it is long enough!
You can gain 3/4 to an inch by putting the throat latch part of the crown outside/above the browband. This does two things: it gives you more space to fill, and it keeps the browband down just a bit so the ears don't get pinched.
My best fitting bridle for my QH is a full size headstall, cob size cavesson, and an oversize browband. It took some time to do this, but it all looks good together and my horse is comfortable. Dover saddlery used to have a section where you could buy all the parts separately. It is more expensive, but you get what you want.
