Saddle Comfy
Saddle Comfy
Choosing the right saddle?

I am having a lot of trouble deciding what type of saddle to get. I enjoy trail riding and want to start doing some jumping, but nothing really serious enough to need a jumping saddle. I like the security of the stock saddle (but don't like western) but I also like the position of all purpose and dressage saddles. Can you jump at all in a dressage saddle? I have seen a few with nice deep seats that would be quite secure but I'm not sure how versatile they would be. I've also looked at some of the stock fender and half-breed styles that are quite comfy too. So what do you think? What do you ride in? How comfortable/ secure and versatile is it?

I'm not sure about jumping in a dressage saddle, never seen it done before. If your looking for something with a deep seat and comfortable I would try out a wintec 2000 saddle. I have one and it has a deep seat, is comfortable and I feel safe in it for jumping. Its an all purpose saddle and you can change out the gullet to fit several horses. They run new for about $500 and I got mine used for $250

I'm after a comfy saddle for Iong distance cycling. Maybe the SMP4Bike Pro that Mark Beaumont is using is OK?

I've been looking for a bicycle saddle that will be comfortable, especially on long rides. I read the book about Mark Beaumont's round the world record ride and saw the bbc blog about his trip from Anchorage, Alaska to Ushuaia in Southern Argentina (bbc.co.uk/blogs/cyclingtheamericas) and am pretty sure he rides the SMP4Bike Pro (smpsaddle.co.uk/index.php/smp4bike-pro.html)

My thoughts are that if its good enough for him, it ought to do for me too. But, before I go and drop £169 on a saddle, I am seeking more input from other long distance cyclists. Have you used one? Was it comfortable.

get a selle saddle.

All custom saddles will be pricey, unfortunately, or else I'd have one, too ;)

I've no experience with BD, but I like Devoucoux. Really well balanced without a lot of knee padding to get in the way. One thing I didn't like was the wither clearance, which was a bit low. Tadd Coffin are great, too.

CWD are okay if you like a lot of excess padding. I haven't ridden in one, but I've seen one up close, and they're very well balanced, but thick. I think these are better suited to shorter riders just based off of basic construction; even a more forward flap would push your leg forward.

County and Hermes are both nice. I feel like Hermes doesn't balance as well as Devoucoux. It kind of sits you backwards (or, the one I rode in did). But it held up really well to the owner's abuse (I don't think she cleaned her saddle in three years when I started riding her horse).

As far as her growing, IME, most of the growth is through the chest and shoulders (but, her being a cross, it's hard for me to say, as I've only ever dealt with Clydesdales). You could have the saddle readjusted should you need it, but that may be difficult if you don't have a master saddler in your area.

Were I in your position, I might be tempted to wait. I think you and your mom need to discuss this and take a look at your finances. You could always resell it, but you won't get what you paid for it, though you'll still get a nice price for it.
