How do I make my saddle "sticky" or not slippery?

When I show in my saddle seat suit and saddle, its all I can do to not slide around. I only show 4-H, and its on my slow, pleasure paint horse.. so nothing too professional. I was wondering if there is anything I can apply to my saddle to make myself "stick" to it. Thanks.

LOL! I guess they have not changed saddle suit material or added a bit of rough leather to the saddles since I last rode in this style 20 years ago. I COMPLETELY sympathize!!

I don't know if you have knee patches or not? (didn't exist then) If so, you can try several things on them to give some grip. Adding products to your pants material is a bit risky, unless water soluble, OR something you can try on a spot to make sure it comes out. Even if you put the product on the saddle, it will still end up on your show pants too.

For knee patches, I have tried Sadle-tite and similar sprays and roll on products sold in tack stores just for this reason. They worked well enough. READ the wash-out/ cleaning instructions before trying this on fabric!!

Other solutions are a spray on or wipe on wax, even something called sticky wax that will keep you put. I wouldn't like this on my show pants, and fun to get off the saddle.

I've used saddle conditioning products made up bees wax and have liberally coated my saddle with it, so much not all soaks in overnight. The most common products in the US were made by "saddle food", "Kieffer", and "Stuebben". You'll smell the honey and see thick yellow hen you open the container up. Great for the saddle and sticking the rider! Again... the pants material here matter!

Now here's some things that might work for the rest of your grip, with no knee patches. When I "clean" my saddle with these products, the dirt rubs in, as does the soap, leaving as sticky mess and sticky leather that attracts even MORE dirt. Sounds like a good thing for you?! :-) One, straight glycerine, right off the bar. A bit of water and rub it right on, but not too much in. Nice sticky mess AND water soluble. Just as sticky and longer lasting is good old Murphyy's Oil Soap, in the tub.. not bottle. I worked at a barn for 9 years as a kid cleaning tack with this stuff. They didn't want me washing it off or using water for some reason, so over the years that tack grew a new layer to cover the stitching and get stickier each week and collect more dirt. All the tack was a uniform color of gray-brown. However, use this when needed, and wash it off later... you'll be fine. Just take a big handfull and coat your saddle, then rub it right in like lotion.., with hands. You'll have a sticky saddle in no time!! When you're done, add water and buff that soap and dirt right off. Good for the leather and hopefully will come out of your show cloths. I'm assuming you can wash them... otherwise dry cleaners shouldn't have an issue with extra soap. :-) ))

No matter which one you try, experiment a bit to get it right before you go in the ring!

Your slippery saddle and clothes will give you better balance that will last you a lifetime. A bit of help once in a while is not so bad. Have a nice 4-H season.

EDIT**********
I'd check with the rules to see if a saddle cover is allowed in the show ring before buying one. It's great for practice, but you can really start to rely on it and feel all afloat in the ring. I doubt these are allowed, but it's worth checking!

How do you make homemade saddle soap?

I need to clean my saddle but i don't have any saddle soap!!!!!!!!

What can i use?

Does vaseline work??????

You could always buy saddle soap.
It's a lot easier to buy rather than make it.
Isn't all that expensive either. (Depending on what you find expensive or not)

One Response to “Saddle Making”

  1. Children are brought up by their parents and as a result generally pick up the same religous beliefs as them. I do think it is terrible when children are indoctrinated before they can formulate their own opinions.

Taken as literally true the Old Testament would be a terrible example for morality.
