horse tack, saddle fitting, saddle pads? what is all this for?
i am a western rider, ben riding all my life. i do barrel racing, and i had a barrel racing saddle for well my whole life, but well it got old, and the sturrip broke, yeah not good. i was never specific on saddle fiting, saddle pads, size of the saddle, or any of that stuff, and i always was perfectly fine. the saddles never hurt the horse. so i dont realt see the need for all thats special stuff. i would go buy a saddle, make sure it was good materal, go home,and break it in. never botherd me or the horse. so i dont see the need. but i also dont know the facts. is all this only for english riders? or is it for western riders to? is there an important meaning for all of it? and what is a saddle pad? and if it is the blanket that goes under the saddle, i use those lol:) so any help would be appreciated:)
The saddle pad is what goes under the saddle. Some horses need a different pad because they have a reaction to the material of the pad. Saddle pads are basically all one size. There might be a smaller one for a pony, and a bigger one for a draft horse though. Same with saddles, bridles, etc.
Saddle size does matter. Take your old saddle and measure from the horn, to the highest part of the back of the saddle (your seat). That is the size of the saddle that fits you, for example, my saddle is 16". Also, some saddles will hurt a horses back. You can find someone who is experienced and help you pick out a saddle. Like have them watch you ride with a new saddle on or something..
Tack is basically everything you use for your horse. Bridle, saddle, saddle pad, anything, this is all tack.
Be careful of what kind of saddle you get. I recently purchased a saddle over the internet and I got ripped off, so just be careful if your getting one over the internet. Make sure you like it, and make sure there IS a return policy. Look into information about what kind of saddle you are getting. Like the namebrand of it. Or like I said, have an experienced person help you.

You have to learn how to communicate effectively with this horse if you are going to have a good relationship with her. It will take time and you will, obviously, have to develop some ability you do not currently have. I would suggest taking look at some of the natural horsemanship trainers and doing some basic ground work with her so she develops trust and confidence -you too. She just needs help. It is apparent you want to help her and you can. Learn some "horse language" which is primarily body language. She learns by release of pressure but you have to develop good timing and feel. If you learn the proper techniques, she will respond correctly, and then you can make progress. Horses are very smart and learn quickly. If you have the knowledge, she will not forget so you have to "start over" everyday. I would recommend to stop the treats and never attempt to entice her with food. She should respond because she trusts and respects you, not because she is looking for a carrot. That doesn't mean you can't ever give her a carrot, just not have it/treats/food related to training. It is great you want to do this. I wish you the best. Be patient. She can come around. Every horse can be helped if you take the time it takes to do it right.
