An interesting debate indeed. I experimented with bits with my personal horse and with the trail horses that I used to manage. There are so many opinions out there that one has to stand back and think. My former partner (a Western rider) swore by a jointed curb reminiscent of a Tom Thumb, and we had a horse that went well in it (but always on a loose rein). I moved towards French Link bits because they have no centre joint to poke the bars of the mouth. All the time we were telling clients to ride on a loose rein, and didn’t a whole lot of them have trouble without a firm contact to balance against!
