Set Reins

Any comments or ideas on the use... or suggestions for the use of draw reins and/or Vienna reins?
Has any body used them on their horse?
Which is better draw reins or Vienna reins?
My new horses old trainer used the Vienna reins to teach head set for dressage.
I would only use vienna or draw reins as a last resort. There really isn't a "head-set" in dressage - its really proper collection that results in the rounded topline and the horse's submission to the bit.
The problem with such training devices is that both the horse and rider can become dependent on them. In addition, they generally create a "false" collection in which the horse flexes in the neck but is not truly using his back and hindquarters effectively. This is called being "hollow" and will not help you in any way when training a dressage horse (or any horse, for that matter).
Since your horse is most likely accustomed to them it may be very hard to find any sort of collection without their help...but to save yourself time in misguided training down the road, try all alternatives first (such as in-hand work, getting true impulsion FIRST before asking to collect, etc...). A horse trained off of draw reins sticks out like a sore thumb in the dressage ring - go back to the basics and establish a true "connection" - eliminating the fake collection that could result from the draw reins.
Hope this helps!

Sawyer/Kate - He Lays In The Reins
Side Reins (As part of my horses training routine)?
Ive recently began using side reins with my one of my show hunters, to help him become accustomed to having preassure put on the bit, then being rewarded when flexed. Because all he has ever had was the "bumping" that hunter riders are famous for.
I used them the other day, at a longer setting, and he came to the bit right away, and was foaming at the mouth like no it was no bodys buisness, which ive never seen him do to that extent. Then the next day when I rode him he came right to me when I asked him to be on the bit.
My question is, is how may times a week can I use the side reins as part of my horses training routine. I wasnt planning on using them more then twice a week. And my current routine, which he seemes to like is (side reigns on: Monday and Thursday, Driving: Tuesday and Friday and Riding: Wednesday and Sunday). What do you think is this too much, what could I change about it, or is it fine? Let me know?
Let the horse tell you. You say your horse seems to like the current routine, so why not stick with what works?
Horses like a routine, but they get bored easily, so it's best to not do the same thing more than two days in a row if you can help it.
If your horse gets bored in the side reins, he will start tugging at them and messing around and that is counter-productive.
Sounds as if you are doing fine. I love side reins and jogging because they offer variety and keep the horse's mouth supple.
