Why isn't Equestrian Hunters in the Olympics? Dressage, cross country, and show jumping are! What is your opinion on it Do you think it should be?
Its mostly based on your position, or that when im trying to get at.
people have different views on what is proper for gymnastics and dressage dont they?
The reason dressage, cross country, and show jumping are in it is because they are considered eventing. And you will see that not only do the riders compete in each individual event. But they also tally up their scores altogether. Since they already have show jumping, it makes no sense to add hunter. Besides for the crowd watching, show jumping is more entertaining since the riders are jumping higher and racing against the clock. Most viewers outside of the equestrian world, can't understand the hunter way of judging. They can't tell who was at fault for what. When I rider takes a short stride, they don't know what that means. Its a foreign language to them. But in show jumping they understand how it works. Its simple. Whoever has the least amount of faults and the fastest time, wins. Anyone can understand that. You could ask yourself the same question on why they don't include western riding? It may sound wrong, but it really comes down to what people want to see. People would rather see the beauty of dressage, the endurance, and power of cross country, and the intensity of show jumping. And to be honest, unfortunately, most people don't care as much about the western events. I ride english but I would love to see western events in the Olympics. But it truly comes down to making money, and gaining viewers. Its the ugly truth.

What breed of horse is best suited for Show Jumping and what qualities would I look for in a horse?
I have yet to show, I have a TWH i think will be good for lower level, he is a good jumper but I doubt he will get very far. After I need to move on I want to know what kind of horse I will need. I know its a long way off but I would like to learn ahead of time.
As others have said, thoroughbreds and warmbloods are great for jumping. But, if you're just working at lower levels, almost anything can jump around 2'. I have a Thoroughbred/Irish Sport Horse cross, and she is built to jump. Holsteiners, Hannoverians, Dutch Warmbloods, and the other warmblood breeds are also hugely popular.
On a jumper, you want really good legs and feet, especially front feet. If you think about it, the horses come down and put all of their weight on their front feet. Make sure your horse isn't sore there and do a thorough vet check. Hocks are also somewhere horses tend to get sore, so make sure your vet checks that out. Make sure you ask the owner about maintenance. A lot of people inject joints as routine maintenance, and you need to decide if that is something you'd like to do or not. Supplements and Legend shots can also be expensive, so make sure you know what you'll need, if anything. My horse wears special shock-absorbing padded shoes in the front because she is prone to bruising. No horse is perfect.
You also need to assess the horse's jumping form over jumps. It is easiest to do this with a still photograph of the horse mid-jump. The forelegs should be parallel, not hanging down. A horse that drops their shoulder isn't just unsightly, it's very dangerous. A horse could catch a solid obstacle and flip. Make sure the horse is careful with its hind end and uses it's neck and back during the jump. If they aren't their head will be in the air and their back hollow. This will make for a horse that is uncomfortable to jump, and they won't be able to jump very high. A horse that is using his neck and back will have a "round" appearance over the topline, like a crescent moon.
Usually horses with an uphill frame and a more compact build are good at jumping. Short to medium length backs, with a sloping shoulder. But, the mind of a horse is just as or more important the confirmation. Make sure the horse is manageable on the ground, and you are comfortable working with the horse. Does the horse need to be in a training program, or can you leave it sitting in the pasture for a week then hop on? This is all information you need to know. The most important this is that you and the horse are a good match, and you really enjoy being with and riding the horse.
