Side Saddle Sidesaddle Winchester1300 side saddle?
How does the sidesaddle shell carrier install on a winchester 1300 defender? I can only see 1 pin in the receiver...
SideSaddle shell carriers are model specific in their fit.
You MUST buy the correct one for your model of shotgun to have the proper hole spacing.
The model of the particular carrier that you need is 1081161 and holds 6 extra rounds. Mounting instructions should have been included in the package.
I know of 2 people that had shotguns that didn't have a model of carrier made for them and what they did was simply use 3 strips of the ultra heavy duty permanent double stick tape on the aluminum backing plate and then stuck it to their receiver after carefully making a couple of notches in the SideSaddle's plate with a file to allow removal of the trigger group retaining pins.
That has worked very well for them and they say they have never had any problems with it coming loose.
I don't recommend using that method of attachment myself, but I thought I'd toss that out there as a last resort possibility for you if you can't find the proper model that you need.

I am probably going to be given a sidesaddle that someone has but no girths or anything else -- just the saddle. That is great but I was looking for girths and "how to tack" and that sort of thing and it seems like you only need 1 balance strap for the off side. The saddle I might be getting has 2 balance straps -- 1 on each side.
Why does it have 2? Am I supposed to use them both and if so, what kind of girth and balance straps do I buy for it?
It looks something like this: http://www.tackwholesale.com/popup_image.php?pID=36&invis=0
I don't know what the brand of saddle I might be getting is -- looks something like some of the Silver Fox's I've seen (so nothing great, but the price is right).
Neither my trainer nor anyone else at my stable has done side saddle so I'm hoping it works out so we can all use it and have some fun and learning!
From my experience, some side saddles have the girths attached to them already, so you don't need to buy a girth (although I always but a girth cover over the one we have to make it a little softer than just a leather strap), while others use a typical dressage girth you should be able to buy at any tack shop. I just recently bought a new dressage girth at Greenhawk for about $40.00 but prices range from $19.95 to over $200.00 depending on quality, materials, etc. Depending on who has had/cared for the saddle, you may find your billets have been shortened, which which case a normal english girth, the correct length to fit your horse, is what you would need.
We also use a dressage saddle pad (deep, white and square) under the one we have floating around our barn; again, nothing fancy just something to get it off the horse's back. Our sidesaddle has a fairly wide tree so sometimes we also need a riser/gel pad/half pad(which is awkward under is) depending on how it fits the particular horse. Some sidesaddles have a built in pad... it really depends on the saddle and the horse.
I have only ever seen one saddle with two balance straps, and it was designed for fat little round ponies that are built very differently from the horses these saddles were originally built to fit 100 years ago. The girl who used it rode with both straps so her saddle didn't slip on her, even though the saddle fit her pony properly. I have seen a few saddles with the spot to put a second strap but the riders chose not to use them, preferring the more traditional look. So, again, it depends on your horse and how the saddle fits.
