How To Help My Horse Lose Weight?
One of my horses is a Gypsy Vanner Cob, 14hh gelding, and kinda big for a draft horse. He is overweight and I really want him to be healthier and I think he would be happier to. My chincoteague pony runs around a lot and he likes to play with her and he gets out of breath so easily. We can't find the right tree size for him on a saddle because it's literally off the charts or what ever you want to call it. We found one saddle the fit him perfectly but it was so cheap that the stitching fell apart on the way over to our house when it was being shipped. How can I help him lose weight? Thank you so much!
There are three golden rules to achieving weight loss in horses, of any age or breed:
1. Exercise- this is crucial. He must burn more calories than he intakes to loose weight, just like people. If he gets out of breath easily, then start slow- just long walks, eventually working up to 30-60 minute sessions. Lunging is great if you find riding him or fitting tack difficult at this time.
2. Feeding grain- look at teh grain you are feeding him closely- how much starch, fat, and protien are in it? Go with grains that are low in calories and fat. Strider by blue seal is a good, lowfat grain. Feed small rations ( some horses only need a handful of grain, start there).
3. Hay/Pasture- limit of possible, the hourse he gets pasture, which can add a "hay belly" quickly to your horse. If this is not possible, limit hay to 1 flake with grain feedings.
