Stock saddle question. What does this mean?
I was looking in a saddleworld catalogue and one of the stock saddles says it has a correctly broken neck what does this mean? is it a good thing?
I never heard of that before, but it was an interesting question! Here's what I found...
A "broken neck" allows the rider to sit deep in the saddle and not on it. It’s also about ‘security’.
I also found some discussion about it on a stockhorse forum. It seems that a saddle with a "broken neck" is one that has a very high pommel... something that may help keep you secure in the saddle, or that may get in the way.
I was trying to figure out what on earth the "neck" of a saddle would be, without it meaning the neck of the horn. First of all, I found a site of stock saddles made in India. All the saddles listed as having a "broken neck" also had no horn, but also seemed very deep seated. I also found a single picture of a saddle with a "neck" labeled on it, but it was a doodle of side saddle and to tell you the truth I couldn't tell which way was up.
Funny how hard it is to find information sometimes!
