stubben dressage saddles flap
Is this a fair price for this saddle?
For a stubben dressage saddle, including saddle bag, breast plate, stirrup irons (worthless old fillis irons, not worth keeping.. practically a safety issue), and leathers. All used. Worn leather, but no tears or cracks that I can see. The tree seems sound and undamaged, 19"
The price is $1,199.00. Is this fair for a used Stubben? I don't know the model - but I did check the leg flap and it is a marked Stubben. I sat in it on the saddle rack and it seemed comfortable, it fit me well (I'm very tall, I need a good long seat), if not a tiny bit big. I'm used to most used saddles being in the $500 range, regardless of brand, but I know that Stubbens are well known as good quality saddles.
Would you buy it?
You need to find what the model is and how old this saddle is. I suspect it is indeed worth the money, but it likely needs to have the panels restuffed, and of course it needs to fit the horse as well as you.
A 19" dressage saddle is very rare. The saddlers we worked with (including Stubben) would only make an 18" stock because anything longer is hard to keep stable/keep it from twisting or drooping in the middle. Kind of like a bridge too far. This saddle was probably custom if it is truly a 19" (measure from the rivet on the side of the pommel to the middle of the cantle, not from the middle of the pommel to the cantle like you might on a western saddle)
Generally a dressage saddle in good condition that is a good make to begin with (Stubben is obviously!) you will expect to pay 3/4 of the new price for a saddle less than 8 years old. For a saddle older than that, you would expect to pay half. If there is wear or scratches, that will take the price down from those starting points. If the leathers are older than 3 years, I would replace them. I replace mine every 3 years as a matter of safety. The stitching is what wears out, not the leathers themselves. I prefer stirrups that are as heavy as I can find. I would agree that the lightweight fillis irons are not appropriate.
add--you will find jump saddles cheaply; they are common and a dime a dozen. dressage saddles are not as common to find used. People find one they like, and just keep using it. Breed people get a jump saddle to show english pleasure, get bored, and sell the saddle, so those can be found very cheaply. Dressage is very different.
