I am a 50-something yr old woman about 5"8" and 150 lbs and want a used Western Saddle. What size would fit me?
I have ridden English all my life but want to trail ride and try Western. I don't like falling off! It hurts more now than it used to. What size seat should I get in a Western saddle. Also is there any one type that is more secure than another? I ride in a 17 and 18" Stubben usually. My little horse is an Arab/quarter horse cross. Would he need the semi or full quarter horse bar tree? This is all a foreign language to me! Thanks.
WHOA! 19" is WAY too big unless you are a major, major pear shape! I'm a 5'6", 175-lb male and ride a 15 1/2" with room to spare! My spare saddle is a 16 1/2" and everyone I have taken riding, even the guy over 200 lbs, has fit in it comfortably. I'm not familiar with a Stubben, but it sounds as if they may be measured quite differently.
Without knowing your general physique, I can't recommend a size, and even with a photo, I couldn't give an accurate answer. Two people with the same measurements may have different contours and bone structure and therefore need different seats. The ONLY way to get a true answer to this question is sit in a few saddles and see what feels comfortable to you. I recommend either a western pleasure saddle, a ranch saddle, or roping saddle. The saddles designed for cutting, barrels, steer wrestling, etc., will not work well for trail riding. The decorative tooling on some saddles looks nice, but weakens the leather, so if you want it to last, get a plain saddle.
Just as no one can give you an accurate answer on seat size here, no one can tell you what type of tree to get. We can't see your horse's conformation. High whithers? Narrow or wide shoulders? Etc. Are there saddles available for you to borrow and see how they fit your horse? Regardless of style, I recommend you get a synthetic tree rather than a wooden tree. One roll with a wooden tree saddle and your horse has permanently destroyed the saddle. Then take into consideration fluctuations in humidty and the bugs that can easily be found in barns and tack rooms. My sythetic tree is 18 years old with no signs of damage or wear.
