When did preservatives and synthetic ingredients start being added to american cosmetic and hygiene products?
People didn't have the convenience of going to a supermarket and picking out face washes, shampoos, and feminine products back in the day. Now that preservatives and synthetic ingredients are highly being utilized, that has changed. Where did this all start?

Synthetic CDO that fails in subprime securitization
Are people aware of all the petrochemicals & synthetic preservatives (parabens) in their beauty products?
I ask because until recently I wasn't & after being really ill I decided to look at this more closely. Like a lot of people I'm careful about my diet: low fat, lots of fruit & veg & tons of water, but I didn't realise what I was putting ON my body could be the problem. Even my expensive 'designer' beauty products are full of chemicals & synthetic preservatives (called parabens) - just look at the list of ingredients on everything from face cream to shower gel. What's the problem? Surely these things have been tested? I'm sure they have & probably on animals - which we all know are just like us humans. I read an article where parabens had been found in cancerous tumours - what the hell where they doing there I want to know! Also Ethical Consumer magazine listed ingredients which could be harmful & yet continue to be used in many beauty products, often increasing allergies. I'm just concerned that we put our trust in these products - often which make big claims & I'm not sure we should.
Most people are not aware of this... the sad thing is that our skin is a sponge and absorbs many of those chemicals. The same can be said for a lot of the cleaning/laundry products you use every day... Formaldehyde can be found in tooth paste and even baby shampoo... most people believe that if it is sold in stores it must be safe... sad truth is that many of the chemicals in our house hold and beauty products have never even been tested for their effects on humans...
