Two Tone English
Help me think of the right word/tone to describe this situation?

I'm writing an essay on George Orwell, mentioning how in several of his writings he follows his opinion by a statement of uncertainty.
For example, in Politics and the English Language, Orwell states, "Look back through this essay, and for certain you will find that I have again and again committed the very faults I am protesting against."
In his essay Why I Write, he spends a good two paragraphs talking about how his early pieces of writing were "ghastly failures"
How would you characterize someone's tone who constantly doubts themself and criticizes their own work?

self-deprecating

You have such a talent for writing. Even as I type this I have deleted it three times worrying if I have everything in its place. And then the urge to put a ton of dots everywhere oh and that smiley face that makes you know I am writing you in a happy tone. English was never ever my strong point and sad to say since the invention of texting my grammar has only gotten worse. My sweet mom is an avid reader and her love skipped a generation, but has happily landed on my daughter. YAY!!! Anyway…totally enjoyed this post:)
