Tree Saddle
want to get my saddle checked for tree...??? cost?
i want to check and see if my english saddle has a broken tree or not. i haven't been using it becuase i think its broken and im not sure. about how much would that cost? would they do it for free? i don't want them to fix it or anything i just want someone to look at it. i realize its different in different states but i just need an estimate, how much do you pay for it? thanks!
Good for you for wanting to be safe rather than sorry!
The two answers you've already received are good ways to see if the tree *might* be compromised. However, older trees - spring trees in particular - can sometimes have a lot of give in the seat area. Also, if there are loose rivets, a ridge of varnish or a rough spot on the tree or spring bar, you can get a variety of noises: clicks, pops, grinds, crunches, etc.
The ONLY way to tell for sure if your tree is broken is to have a saddler / saddle fitter drop the panels, peel back the gullet cover and check the tree. I charge $100 to do this, but if the tree is broken and I don't have to put the saddle back together, there's no charge.
Some minor problems can be repaired - a broken rivet, for example - and some can't. If it's a major tree issue, your only options are either to retire the saddle, or have it re-treed (which is very pricey - think $500 and up).
