The girth on my western has been broke, which girth and how do i attach it?

I've been given a beautiful western saddle for free as it has a broken clinch attachment as i have exnplained in the picture on the below link:

I'm an all english rider, never even dabbled in western, have no idea where to get, buy or order tack for this saddle in the uk. What will i need to fix it and where can i get the clinch from? and can you use a different type of girth on this saddle?

help please, thanks!

What you are pointing to is called the off billet. You can buy them from country supply or any saddle shop. Slip it halfway through the ring and put the ends in the buckle on your girth. You can also tie it with a piece of leather chord.

On the other side is a cinch strap. This tightens the girth. If that has come undone then by a new one (if that one is defective) and put the end in the ring on the saddle, bend it over and tie it with a leather chord.

If you get a cinch I will suggest neoprene. Waffle type preferably. It is far superior to cotton and does not gall the horse nearly as easily.

Egads. I didn't even *know* anything other than wool was used in the panels of leather English saddles. I am aware some synthetics saddles have foam panels (because I ride in one and hate it) but it wouldn't have occurred to me, seeing this saddle and the word “flocking” that it could be anything other than wool.

Great tips for both online shopping and used tack store shopping!
