Wide Saddle
Saddle might be too wide?
I recently bought a used close contact saddle but I think it might be a bit too wide for him even though it's the same tree size as the saddle i currently use..
anyway, when I put it on him it seemed to fall pretty close to his withers (even though they are pretty small as he's a quarter horse) and then it seems to be a flare out a bit at the bottom of the front panels.. so is this saddle too wide.. or what is the issue? thanks!
Yes that sounds like it is too wide. Just because it is labeled the same as another one of your saddles doesn't mean it's the same. Saddles are kind of like shoes, all the brands are different and they have a different fit. I would try to return this saddle and measure your last saddle to find one that is a proper fit.

Consequences of a saddle that's too wide?
This is purely figurative, by the way.
Are there any negative consequences of a saddle thats gullet is too wide?
A saddle that's too narrow has too much pressure on the bars and causes pain to the horse's shoulders. A saddle that's too wide does not have excess shoulder pain. Instead the shoulder has no support so it does not get off their spine and/or withers. The saddle will make it difficult for the horse to bend and flex their back, can cause rub marks to the withers, and will cause pain. In some cases this can be partially improved by adding extra padding under the saddle such as thicker saddle pads. In a saddle that's much too wide even extra padding won't help.
