I think you should go for it. I understand what you mean when you say you dont want to give up on him. He is already showing his ability to jump, i am a firm believer that a horse can do anything with the right amount of support/training. I think you should keep working with him and really see what he can do when he reaches 6, then decide. If he doesnt work out at least you can say you tried your hardest!
